Modern public space, abundant greenery, functional elements and unique architectural solutions. This is exactly what the pedestrian zone in the centre of Trenčín will look like.
Revitalisation of the pedestrian zone Hviezdoslavova, Jaselská, Vajanského, Sládkovičova
The area around Hviezdoslavova Street now represents perhaps the most changed part of old Trenčín. During the construction of the city walls in the 15th century, this link between the Lower Town (Dolné mesto) and the Peace Square (Mierové námestie) was gradually created, with several side streets leading into it. From the second half of the 19th century, its suburban character changed into a main shopping street with many shops, cafés and restaurants. In the 1970s and 1980s, most of the historic houses were demolished to make way for new construction—the Circular Army House, the District Office, the Gastrocentrum center… In this way, Trenčín acquired a complete pedestrian zone, though this redevelopment is still perceived very sensitively by many inhabitants today.
The reconstruction of the pedestrian zone seeks to build on its historical significance and to make this now largely neglected environment more attractive, although it is worth mentioning the recently completed reconstruction of the Gastrocentrum center, directed by the Trenčín Self-Governing Region. The current revitalisation of the whole area will create a multifunctional space bringing culture, art, shopping, gastronomy and physical activities together. The barrier-free solution with an area of up to almost 14,000 square metres should also bring more greenery or water areas. The Štúrovci monument will be relocated to a more attractive location and a children’s playground will be built in its place.
The project has been realised thanks to the title of European Capital of Culture Trenčín 2026.
